Course Description

This two-day course is facilitated by Mary Rose Brady and Dr Patricia Watts and is aimed at practitioners who wish to enhance their knowledge and skills in supporting children and young people with medical conditions, either diagnosed or undiagnosed. Supporting children and young people with medical conditions requires practitioners to have an awareness of the physical, social, emotional and developmental impact of living with a medical condition. The course will consider the impact of: - Understanding a child’s journey and disruption to physical, emotional, social and educational development - The impact of having or not having a medical diagnosis - Co-occurring issues - Child development, polyvagal theory, health behaviour change and safeguarding considerations - Medical trauma and procedural anxiety and working with pain and medication - Non-organic pain and links to trauma - Health inequality - Identity/belonging - Navigating medical settings including primary care, out-patient care, in-patient care and palliative care - Working within multi-disciplinary teams - Supporting siblings and families - Promoting advocacy/voice/communication through creative engagement - Using art to support emotional literacy, psychoeducation, regulation, distraction and self-management Learning Outcomes: The course will support participants to: - Identify potential developmental disruptors for in a child’s journey whether physical, emotional, social or educational and work with resilience factors to minimize developmental disruption. - Recognise the challenges associated with receiving a diagnosis, awaiting a diagnosis or not receiving a diagnosis for a medical condition - Understand the impact of co-occurring issues - Recognise the signs of medical trauma, procedural anxiety and the risk to mental health - Raise awareness of normative child development, polyvagal theory, health behaviour change and safeguarding considerations when working with children with a medical condition -Support practitioners to recognise the impact that medical conditions can have on attachment and parent/child relationships and wider family functioning -Support practitioners to use art to promote communication, advocacy and voice for CYP in medical settings -Support for practitioners to use art with CYP for emotional literacy, psychoeducation, self-regulation and self-management. Cancellation Policy

The Centre for Creative Therapeutic Practice (TCCTP) Refund and Cancellation Guidance Policy and Conditions Joining information for all of TCCTP's courses will normally be sent 1-week prior to the start date - please check your junk & spam folders if you have not seen this information - contacting the office on the day or evening before the start date will not always be responded to prior to the course starting. All cancellations must be submitted in writing to hello@tcctp.org. Cancellations made one month or before will be refunded in full minus £10 administration fee. Less than one month but more than 14 days before the course will be charged at 50%. Less than 14 days' notice will be fully chargeable. Please Note • Programmes are subject to change. • It is the attendees responsibility to check their email including junk and spam folders for joining details. • There is a possibility that the course/event may be cancelled due to insufficient numbers, unforeseen circumstances, or force majeure. In the case of insufficient numbers or unforeseen circumstances, a full refund will be offered. In the case of force majeure such as the Coronavirus pandemic, alternative dates will be offered. If these dates are not suitable, a partial refund will be offered taking into account cost of overheads • If TCCTP offer face-2-face training - Please do not book any travel or accommodation until you have received confirmation of your booking from TCCTP. We will not be liable for this cost in the event you are not booked onto the course/event. • Where fees for attendees are being paid by a third party (e.g. employer). TCCTP will endeavour to collect the course fee through invoicing. However, where the third party fails to make payment, the course attendee will remain liable for said fees if cancellation is not made on time within our terms (see cancellation our policy above).
